If your credential was lost or stolen, it is recommended that you file a police report immediately to help prevent potential identity theft. New Mexico MVD allows you to change your Driver’s License or ID number as an added measure of protection if you request it as well. You must bring a copy of the police report and a signed statement saying that you want MVD to issue you a new Driver’s License or ID number because your old license or ID was lost or stolen.
Please remember that now there are two types of credentials, REAL ID and Standard. If you have a Standard Driver’s License or ID which needs to be replaced, you may choose to replace it with the same type or switch it to a REAL ID compliant credential. To obtain a Driver’s License or ID Replacement, you will need the following:
- One proof of age and identity
- REAL ID required documents (If converting a Standard credential to REAL ID)
Plus the following if you want MVD to issue a new number for your Driver’s License or ID
- A copy of the Police Report
- A signed statement saying that you want MVD to issue you a new Driver’s License or ID number because your old license or ID was lost or stolen
**Note: You will be issued a temporary paper Driver’s License or ID valid for 45 days while your regular Driver’s License or ID Replacement is being processed and mailed to you.
